RESOLV News: The new research building CALEDO was officially opened on Friday, October 10, 2025 at TU Dortmund.
In the presence of Ina Brandes, Minister for Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, TU Dortmund University officially opened its new CALEDO research building last Friday. The new building offers state-of-the-art laboratories with space for 100 scientists. There, they will find ideal conditions for their research on the design and innovative use of liquid phases for environmentally friendly and novel processes in chemistry and biotechnology as well as for pharmaceutical products.
The Federal Government, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and TU Dortmund have invested around 90 million euros in the new building and in equipping it with large scale scientific equipment. Researchers from the three faculties of Bio and Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Physics will find dedicated laboratory areas here. The labs and the equipment enable state-of-the art analytics for all aspects of complex liquid phase design.
CALEDO's analytical capabilites will be accessible to all researchers at TU Dortmund and, in the future, also to the Ruhr University Alliance. "CALEDO is an important facility for TU Dortmund as a whole as well as for the Ruhr Innovation Lab – our joint application with Ruhr Universität Bochum, for the Excellence Initiative – and will play a central role here," emphasized TU Dortmund Rector, Prof. Manfred Bayer.
As spokesperson of CALEDO, Prof. Gabriele Sadowski explained how research on complex liquid phases will lead to more effective research in the future: "If we better understand the interactions between the molecules involved and the liquid phases surrounding them, we can, for example, significantly reduce the number of expensive and time-consuming test series, find a replacement for toxic and ecologically questionable solvents and even contribute to the production of more stable medications."
Having prevaild over three rounds of decision making, and recieving approval from the German Council of Science and Humanities in 2020, Prof. Sadowski and Dr. Christoph Brandenbusch from the faculty of Bio- and Chemical Engineering and their team are spearheading new research projects while pioneering positive change and development.
