Frost flowers are an endangered species

GEO Magazine: Shaped by physics, endangered by insulated glazing. Frost flowers are blooming less and less frequently on our windows.

An article in the current issue of GEO magazine explores the beauty of frost flowers and the physical processes that give rise to these ephemeral artworks.

Over the years, geophysicist and passionate photographer Peter A. Jeschke has captured thousands of these filigree beauties in photographs.

In the article, Prof. Kenneth Libbrecht from the California Institute of Technology and RESOLV member Prof. Karina Morgenstern explain the conditions under which the ice crystals grow and why unique patterns emerge.
