Girls’ Day 2026 at RESOLV: a day in the life of a scientist

Lab coats on, safety goggles ready – and a lot of curiosity in the air. For one day, RESOLV welcomed a group of 18 girls from across North Rhine-Westphalia to step into the world of science and experience what it feels like to be a researcher.

The day began with an introduction to Solvation Science, opening the door to a field most of the participants were encountering for the first time. But it didn’t stay theoretical for long. Soon, the group set off to explore RESOLV’s research building ZEMOS and the university campus, getting a sense of where science happens every day.

Then it was time to head into the lab.

Guided by early-career researchers, the participants rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They ran experiments, observed reactions, and asked plenty of questions along the way. What might have seemed abstract in a classroom quickly became something tangible, something they could see, test, and understand.

In between experiments, there was time to pause, chat, and connect over lunch. Conversations ranged from favorite school subjects to what it’s really like to study science and work in research. It was a chance to hear firsthand stories – and maybe start imagining their own paths.

By the end of the day, chemistry and physics didn’t feel quite so distant anymore. What started as curiosity had turned into hands-on experience, new insights, and, for some, perhaps even a spark for the future.

A big thank you to everyone who made this day possible. And who knows? Maybe we’ll meet some of these young women again, this time as scientists at RESOLV.
