On 10 October 2018, the Young Chemistry Network Ruhr organized its 9th annual meeting at ZEMOS, RUB, in cooperation with the cluster of excellence RESOLV. RESOLV's Speaker Prof. Dr. Martina Havenith welcomed about 100 young scientists from undergraduate students to postdocs of chemistry departments in Bochum, Dortmund, Essen-Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr. The participants presented scientific results from every discipline of chemical research through lectures and posters, while young group leaders gave insights into their current investigations. In addition, scheduled workshops gave the guests the opportunity to either learn more about career paths or to be introduced into the experimental techniques in use at RUB, such as the solvation laboratories of the research building ZEMOS and the accelerator and microscopy facilities of RUBION. The highlight of the day was the fascinating and entertaining plenary lecture of Prof. Pavel Jungwirth (Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague) on "Exploring Solved Electrons by Explosive as well as Non-Explosive Experiments and Simulations". The symposium ended with the poster and presentation prizes awarded by industry representatives and a stellar barbecue in excellent weather.
A young and active chemistry network
As part of the German Chemical Society (GDCh), the Young Chemistry Network (JCF) is regionally distributed and offers valuable events for chemistry students and young scientists. The JCFs of the Ruhr area comprise the local sections of Bochum, Dortmund, Essen-Duisburg and Mülheim an der Ruhr. The Ruhr network’s annual symposium has been established in 2010, creating a platform for scientific and personal exchange among chemistry students within the Ruhr area. This year’s event was supported by Altana, Evonik Industries, chemPUR, A.S.I. Wirtschaftsberatung, Carl Roth, the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and RESOLV.
